Hanover Park, IL- Alabama traveled to the Third Annual Chicago Classic USTA/ITF Futures tournament. The team competed in 7 divisions this weekend, made it to 4 final rounds, and brought home 3 Championship titles.
Alabama dominated the Men’s B division this weekend, meeting head-to-head in the finals of singles and doubles. Sophomore Alex Saporito went undefeated this tournament in the Men’s B divisions, earning titles in both. In Men’s B singles, Jeremy Boyd and Alex Saporito battled it out, favoring Saporito. Boyd and Saporito faced teammate Avery Downing and her partner, Michelle Wilson in the Men’s B Doubles Championship match. The competitive match ended with a win by Boyd and Saporito in a 3rd set tiebreaker (4-6; 6-0; ).
Freshman Conner Stroud took over the competition in the Men’s Open division and made it to the singles final. Stroud played a tough match, but fell short to University of Florida’s Chris Herman (6-1; 7-6). Teammates Conner Stroud and Thomas Venos cruised through the Men’s Open Doubles division, winning the Championship title against Chris Herman and his partner, Jason Keatseangsilp (6-2; 6-3). This marked the first Men’s Open Title in Alabama History!!
Junior Lauren Haneke-Hopps fought hard this weekend, finishing 3rd in the Women’s Open singles division after defeating world-ranked #70, Carolina Lasso from Ecuador (7-6, 4-6, 6-2). Sean Burns finished fourth in the Quad Open singles division after great matches against 3 players ranked in the top 50 in the world (1-6; 1-6).
Alabama now looks to their final home tournament of the season, the Alabama Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament on Nov 2nd! Roll Tide!
