This weekend the Alabama wheelchair basketball teams were in Wichita, Kansas. The Bama men had four challenging college games over the weekend. The men had three games on Friday and one on Saturday; the Tide faced Whitewater, Illinois, Nebraska-Omaha, and Southwest Minnesota State. The first game on Friday morning was against the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. After a long day of travel on Thursday and this early Friday matchup, the men came out sluggish. The men battled and entered the second half with a three point lead. However, UWW pulled away late after a back and forth game. Whitewater was able to knock down late game free throws to win by a final score of 62-72.
The next game was against the University of Illinois. Illinois came out on fire, while Alabama got off to a slow start and found themselves down by double digits early; the men seemed to be feeling the after effects of the close loss that morning. In the second half, the Tide was able to play their brand of basketball and show their experience and grit. The men gained separation late to pull off the 57-49 comeback win.
Alabama had one more game on Friday against the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Early on, shots weren’t going Bama’s way, but their defense was holding strong. As the game went on, Alabama was able to control the game in transition and get some easy buckets. The final score was Alabama-65, UNO-44. The final game of the weekend was a Saturday matchup against Southwest Minnesota State University. Both teams came out a little cold on offense. Alabama was playing their usual smash-mouth defense. As the game went on, the Tide got hot and were able to get some easy baskets in transition, due to their defensive pressure. Alabama with another big win, 67-51.
The men finished the weekend 3-1.
The Crimson Tide men are now 14-3 on the season. You can catch both the men and women in action next Saturday, for the grand home opening of the Stran-Hardin Arena. The Tide will be playing against Alabama’s alumni teams. The men play at 3:00 PM and the women play at 5:00. Roll Tide!
